CONTINIOUS (FORMATIVE) EVALUATING SYSTEM FOR OUR STUDENTS
Forms 1, 2, 3 and 4
1.1.Evaluation is done during the scholastic year. Thus we have:-
1.1.1. Three (3) evaluations during the scholastic year (one in November, another in January and a third one in May).
1.1.2. A Half-Yearly Exam (in February); and
1.1.3. An Annual Exam (in June).
1.2. For each evaluation, the marks of each subject are out of 100 and are based on homeworks and tests given in class.
1.3. Teachers should inform the students and the headmaster about the way they distribute the marks of every evaluation.
1.4. The global mark is based on these three evaluations, on the half-yearly exam and the annual exam, so that a student may be promoted from one form to another.
1.5. The global mark for each subject is out of 100 marks.
1.6. The total of the global mark for each subject is thus formed:
1.6.1. Every evaluation forms 5%: 3x5% = 15%
1.6.2. The half-yearly exam = 25%
1.6.3. The annual exam = 60%
1.7. A student is promoted from one form to another if he reaches these two criteria:
1.7.1. In the global mark a student must obtain an average of 50% in each subject; and
1.7.2. Must obtain 50% in the main subjects which are: Religion, Maltese, English, and Mathematics. From Form 3 onwards Physics is included too.
1.8. If a student is caught copying, he loses the marks of the evaluation or of the exam. Moreover the student will not be allowed to continue the exam and is sent home. In this case, instead of the subject’s mark, the word ‘caught copying’ is written.
2.1. Every case of sickness during an evaluation or exams should be authenticated by means of a medical certificate.
2.2. The evaluations.
2.2.1. If a student is sick when he is supposed to do a test, the teacher may base the evaluation mark on the homeworks given, or the student may sit for the test when he returns to school. In this case both the student and his parents must be informed in advance.
2.2.2. In case one of the evaluations, either that before the half-yearly exam or that before the annual exam, cannot be done because of long term sickness, the percentage of the evaluation must be added to the percentage of that exam. For example, if a student could not sit for a re-sit of the second evaluation, then the half-yearly exam will have its own percentage (i.e. 25%) and that of the second evaluation (i.e. 5%). In such cases the student must be informed about such changes in due time to give the necessary attention to the half yearly exam.
2.3. The exams.
2.3.1. The half-yearly exam.
2.3.1.1. If a student gets sick during the half-yearly exam, a re-sit should be done as soon as possible, for example if the student catches a cold and loses three exams, these exams may be done either during the remaining half-yearly examination period or when the student returns to school.
2.3.1.2. In case of a long term sickness, where a student misses many lessons and cannot sit for a re-sit of the half-yearly exam, the May evaluation will have 30% of the global mark.
2.3.2. The annual exam.
2.3.2.1. If a student gets sick during the annual exam, a re-sit should be done as soon as possible. For example, if the student catches a cold and loses three exams, these exams may be done either during the remaining half-yearly examination period or when the student returns to school.
2.3.2.2. In case of long term sickness, where a student misses the annual exam, and cannot sit for the exam during the remaining examination period, the student has to sit for the re-sits in September.
3.1. If a student fails in one or more of the main subjects (i.e. Religion, Maltese, English, Mathematics and from Form 3 onwards Physics too) the student should sit for the re-sits in September.
3.2. If a student fails in any one or two secondary subjects, the students may not sit for the re-sits.
3.3. If a student fails in any three or more secondary subjects, a meeting should be held during which the student, his parents or guardians and the headmaster should be present and together decide which re-sits should be done.
3.4. The re-sits are held during the first three working days after the 9th of September.
3.5. In order to be promoted from one Form to another, a student must obtain at least 50% of the marks in each subject whether it is a main subject or a secondary subject.
3.6. In case a student fails to obtain 50% of the marks in any re-sit (whether a main or a secondary subject), the student must repeat the Form. An exception to this rule may be applied because of a grave humanitarian or any other grave reason.
Form 5
4.1. Since Form 5 students finish the scholastic year in March, they sit only for two evaluations.
4.2. These two evaluations are held on the same dates as those of the other Forms, that is, one in November and the second one in January.
4.3. Each evaluation carries 20% of the global mark.
4.4. The Form 5 annual exam is held on the same dates of the half-yearly exams of the other Forms.
4.5. The Form 5 annual exam carries 60% of the global mark.
4.6. Every case of sickness during the evaluations or the annual exam should be authenticated by means of a medical certificate.
4.7. In case of sickness where a student cannot sit for the first evaluation, the percentage of the first evaluation will be added to that of the second evaluation. In this case the percentage of the second evaluation will be 40% of the global mark.
4.8. In case of sickness where a student cannot sit for the second evaluation, the percentage of the second evaluation will be added to that of the annual exam. In this case the percentage of the annual exam will be 80% of the global mark.
4.9. If a student gets sick during the annual exam, a re-sit should be done as soon as possible, for example if the student catches a cold and loses three exams these exams may be done either during the remaining half-yearly examination period or when the student returns to school.
4.10. If a student gets sick during the annual exam, and he cannot sit for the re-sits, the word ‘sick’ should be written on the result sheet.
